Snowspeeder

The Incom T-47 speeder was originally designed as a civilian craft, used for hauling repulsor-assisted cargo containers. The Rebel Alliance added a pair of laser cannons to turn the small vehicle into a low-altitude attack and reconnaissance craft, while further modifications to its engines and avionic systems were made so that they could operate in the icy conditions of Hoth - thus earning them the name 'snowspeeders.'

The snowspeeeder is a viable light attack craft, suitable for engaging lightly armored enemy vehicles. Its speed and agility make it a competent recon craft, while the rear-mounted tow cable and magnetic harpoon allow it to haul cargo. Its most celebrated role, however, is as the David to the AT-AT walker's Goliath.

Most Rebel weaponry was insufficient for dealing with the heavily armored walking assault transports; it was the speeder's heritage as a simple cargo hauler that would enable the Rebels to topple the huge war machines. By affixing the magnetic harpoon to a walker's leg and then winding the super-strong tow cable around the plodding vehicle's limbs, the speeders on Hoth and elsewhere were able to trip up the AT-AT's and bring them crashing to the ground. This simple, if risky, tactic spared the Rebels the brunt of many walker-led assaults.
