Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Long oppressed, the planet Bajor's occupation by the Cardassians finally draws to a close at the beginning of DS9. This leaves the Cardassian space station Terok Nor available for the Federation to administer. Commander Benjamin Sisko is assigned to command the station and help prepare Bajor for Federation membership.

The abrupt discovery of a stable wormhole in the Bajoran system soon makes the system strategically important. It leads to the far side of the galaxy, and was created by the Prophets, ethereal alien life forms that are the basis of Bajoran spiritual beliefs.

The series was never a huge ratings winner, and in the beginning was a pale shadow of The Next Generation. When Season 3 came around, it was decided to add the Defiant to the mix. The Defiant was a small, 5-deck Federation warship, originally built to fight the Borg. This led to more off-station stories. However, it was deemed not enough, and Season 4 saw a relaunch of the series. A more upbeat theme, more ships in the title sequence, and lots of Klingons were the recipe that saw DS9 through it's final four seasons. Additionally, TNG character Worf was added, to bring in more TNG viewers. Ultimately, the show expanded and grew from this point - most notably through the Dominion War arc - and earned its place as a respected entry into the annals of science fiction television.
