Star Trek: First Contact

After the pivotal Next Generation episode 'The Best of Both Worlds', fans were desperate for more Borg. Season 5's 'I, Borg' and the two parter 'Descent' that bridged Seasons 6 and 7 took the Borg in new directions before we really had a chance to get to know them.

First Contact changed all that, and in some ways cursed us to a little too much Borg action in Voyager. Nevertheless, this films stands up well on it's own, and it is easily the best of the Next Generation features.

The plot revolves around the Borg's attempts to go back in time and assimilate Earth before it has a chance to develop warp drive. The Enterprise follows, and soon finds itself overrun by the Borg.

Creepy, atmospheric, and above all, 'bigger' than the average episode, this film actually packs a bit of a punch. We get some great characterisation for Picard, a nice space battle, and a story that's never really been told in Trek before.

There are a couple of plot holes, such as why did the Borg not simply go back in time from their homeworld, then travel to Earth without meeting any resistance? And why did they send back their queen? Surely any bunch of drones would do, why the most valuable?

Nevertheless, this films stands up as a great piece of Trek, and it's good to see the TNG cast having an outing that matches up to some of the better movie exploits of the original crew.
