Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
Leonard Nimoy took the director's chair for this third film in the franchise. His character's vastly reduced on-screen role meant he did not have the difficulty of directing himself, something he would face later in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
This third film sets a sombre tone right from the beginning, with Kirk brooding over his friend's death in the previous film. The Enterprise is being mothballed and Doctor McCoy is apparently losing his mind.
Not regarded as the finest film in the franchise, Star Trek III still has it's share of action and emotion. William Shatner is at his melodramatic best, but the whole film is overshadowed by gloom, and reaches it's climax about fifteen minutes before the actual end. A necessary bridge between the second and fourth films, Star Trek III gingerly fills the gap with an uneven plot that doesn't really have a clear beginning or end.
Far from being the finest of the Trek films, Star Trek III is, thankfully, also far from being the worst.
