Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual
Started before the first Star Trek film was announced, this book contains designs of other
Federation ships and installations not depicted in the series at the time. It also has an exhaustive list of starship names and dates of construction.
The book is presented as 'classified' information found in 1970, having got into military computers somehow from the future. Each page is basically a datasheet from Federation records.
After Gene Rodenberry and Franz Joseph had a disagreement, the book was 'de-canonised', to Joseph's dismay, despite Rodenberry being initially hugely supportive of the book.
Many of the crew working on the Star Trek films were great fans of Joseph's work. During the first three films, on several of the monitors on the bridge of the Enterprise, Joseph's illustrations are visible. For those who argue that only onscreen evidence is 'canon', this provides a way for at least some of Joseph's work to be considered as such.
