Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Spock's half-brother, Sybock, hijacks the Enterprise and takes it on a voyage to the centre of the galaxy.

Often referred to as the 'Kirk vs. God' film, Star Trek V is something of a mish-mash of ideas, generally focussed on the them of faith in oneself, but comes across as a slightly cheesey affair.

Star Trek IV's humour was thought to be a major reason behind it's success, and so the same element is shoehorned into this fifth instalment. Unfortunately, some of the dialogue ends up feeling rather forced, and the theme of togetherness seems unnecessary after these characters have been working together for so long.

William Shatner's directorial debut fell victim to a mismanaged budget and a poor special effects team, Industrial Light and Magic being unavailable. This meant that the finale, which was supposed to be much more impressive, could not be completed as planned.

Shatner asked for funds from Paramount to make a Special Edition of the film for the DVD release, much like The Motion Picture recieved, but was turned down.
