Star Trek: Voyager

Reviled by many hardcore Trek fans but better-received by more casual viewers, Voyager follows the titular starship after it is thrown into the Delta Quadrant - 70,000 light years from Federation space. Calculating it would take 75 years to reach home, the crew merges with that of a stranded Maquis ship and beings the long journey. This premise recalls the Odyssey in basic structure.

Voyager is the first and so far only Star trek installment to feature a female captain, who ironically was portrayed as tougher and more action-oriented than any lead captain since Kirk. Other unorthodox crewmembers included a self-adaptive hologram, non-Starfleet aliens from the Delta Quadrant, and a former Federation civilian assimilated by the Borg and later broken away from the Collective.

Diehard Trekkies disliked the show in large part because of what was perceived as an excess of technobabble, forced plots, plot devices that were improbable or implausible even for Star Trek, and the 'dumbing down' of certain aspects of Trek, especially the Borg. Such inconsistences were less obvious to fans who were not as extensively familiar with previous Trek canon.
