Stargate: Atlantis

Spin-off TV series of Stargate SG-1. The series has been renewed for a fifth season.

Premise

SG-1 locate a power source that enables them to dial a stargate in another galaxy. The problem is, if a team goes though, they may not be able to return if the gate at the other end is not sufficiently powered to establish a wormhole to Earth. Doctor Elizabeth Weir heads an international team for just that purpose.

(What follows are spoilers for the pilot episode.)

On arrival in the Pegasus Galaxy, the team discovers they are in a city deep underwater, none less then the mythical city of Atlantis. The city apparently was originally on Earth, but flew to the Pegasus galaxy. There, the Ancients that inhabited it discovered the Wraith, an enemy that fed on the energies of the living. The team from Earth soon made the same discovery, and find themselves in a life-or-death struggle to protect not only themselves and the city, but also the only known stargate in Pegasus that's capable of dialing Earth.

Atlantis enjoyed critical success for its first season, but has seen its fortunes waver in subsequent seasons. The increase in DVR usage has affected the ratings results, which are believed substantially higher than the Nielson system currently records.

(Very minor spoilers for Season 2 are contained in the next paragraph.)

Ronon Dex was introduced in the second season, a resident of the Pegasus Galaxy, on the run from the Wraith. Much criticism has been levelled at his character and that of Teyla Emmagon, with many fans believing them to be largely irrelevant and under-used. Conversely, the character of Doctor McKay has been the subject of many episodes due to his popularity with the fans, leading some to voice concerns that he may become over-used and played-out.

(Spoilers for the conclusion of season 3 and beginning of season 4 are contained in the next paragraph.)

Season 3 concluded with a slight 'reboot' of the series as a whole. The city was left stranded in deep space with a depleted oxygen supply, heavily damaged control tower and a severly injured Elizabeth Weir. The character's role is to be reduced to occasional appearances for season four leaves . Additionally, Samantha Carter from Stargate SG-1 has joined the cast as the new expedition leader with the commencement of season 4.
