Stargate SG-1

The mothballed Stargate, resting on level 28 of Cheyenne Mountain, suddenly springs to life and a new enemy is unleashed. Colonel O'Neill is called out of retirement to return to Abydos and find out what happened at the other end of the gate.

His new team, SG-1, consists of himself, Captain Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal'c, one of the enemy soldiers who questions his beliefs.

Made three years after the successful film, the series made a few minor changes to the storyline. What follows are some minor spoilers for the pilot episode.

-We discover that the gates on Abydos and Earth are part of a much larger network built by The Ancients.
-Ra was a Goa'uld, a parasite living inside a humanoid host. This does not quite fit the visuals seen in the film of Ra's demise.
-All gates are supposed to have a dialling device to enable their use. The Abydos one was uncovered after the mission from the film.

Stargate SG-1 is currently the longest running science fiction series at ten seasons. After the fifth season, the Sci-Fi channel pcked up SG-1 for what was expected to be the final season. The series did so well for them, that it was renewed again for a seventh. This again was widely expected to be the last season, and a movie was planned afterwards. As the season drew on and an eighth began to look likely, the plot for the fim became the two-part season finale 'The Lost City'. It also laid some groundwork for the spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis.

For the ninth season, Richard Dean Anderson finally gave up his starring role after three years of steadily diminishing appearences, and Ben Browder of Farscape fame took the mantle of commanding SG-1. A new General was also brought in, Don S. Davis having left the role of General Hammond at the end of the seventh series. Played by Beau Bridges, General Hank Landry now oversees operations at the SGC, with General O'Neill making occasional appearances. He has also been in a small number of Stargate: Atlantis episodes. A new villainous race was introduced, the Ori, Ancients who demanded to be worshipped as Gods.

Farscape's Claudia Black continued the role of Vala, first from Season 8, as a regular cast member for Season 10.

The Sci-Fi channel announced the cancellation of Stargate in August 2006, but not before the show reached a landmark 200th episode.
