Starship Troopers

Starship Troopers is a first-person, military science fiction narrative novel written by Robert A. Heinlein, following the journey of one Juan 'Jonnie' Rico from recruit to officer during the an interstellar war between Humanity and 'the Bugs;' a race of intelligent arthropods which have colonised many worlds. The novel explored ideas such as suffrage, equality, civic service and virtue, war, capital punishment and the nature of criminals, with an emphasis on so-called 'juvenile delinquents.'

In 1997, a film by the same name was released, followed by a direct-to-video sequel in 2004. Although they share a name, the novel and films are only remotely related, sharing characters of similiar or identical names and general theme.

A series of comics, adapted from the 1997 film, were released in 1997 and 1998. A Japanese manga and OVA, more closely related to the original novel, was released in 1988. A CGI series, entitled Roughnecks; Starship Troopers Chronicles, aired in 1999, and features a blend of the novel and the movie from 1997.

The novel also spawned a board game in 1976 by Avalon Hill,y entitled 'Starship Troopers.' In 1997, Avalon Hill released a new game, 'Starship Troopers: Prepare for Battle,' which was based on the film.

A simplistic computer game, feature a monetary reward system for burning bugs, was released in 1982. In 1998, Mythic Entertainment released 'Starship Troopers: Battlespace,' which was available to America Online subscribers, which featured AOL members playing for either Klendathu or the Federation and battling one another for dominance in an online setting. A real-time tactics game, 'Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy,' was released in 2000 by Blue Tongue Entertainment, and a first-person shooter based on the 1997 film, and sharing the same name, was released in 2005. A roleplaying game by Mongoose Publishing, with corresponding minatures, was also released in 2005.
