X-Com

Computer game series. The games in the series are:
-UFO: Enemy Unknown
-Terror From The Deep
-X-Com: Apocalypse
-X-Com: Interceptor

It describes the struggle of the human race with a race (or several allied races) of aliens, starting from modern-day Earth and eventually taking it to the stars.

With aliens attacking from Mars, X-Com exists as a multi-nation funded organisation. It's job, fight the alien menace! Operating from a range of secret bases around the globe (very similar to the Gerry Anderson secret bases; see Terrahawks and Thunderbirds) X-Com has rights to travel in any airspace in pursuit of aliens. The aliens are a typical abducting and cattle-mutilating lot and so many engagements center around the farms featuring hicks and cows.

Frequently the aliens raid a town in an attempt to frighten a nation into capitulating. X-Com typically responds to such threats by demonstrating that humans can still inflict far more damage than aliens. A typical city after a fight between aliens and X-Com resembles Paris after a ten minutes of Team America: World Police.

And because X-Com has to find out what the aliens are doing with all the hicks and cows they must infiltrate alien saucers and bases to locate the commanders and capture them for a little probing pay-back.

But insane body counts and high explosives in confined spaces is not all X-Com is about.
Deep in their secret bases, unsupervised by such niceties such as ethics commitees, the worlds top scientists (for hire) put the probes into any orifice of the aliens they can find. They also work hard to sort out how to use the alien weaponry so that the X-Com bravos can face the alien menace on equal terms.
