X-wing
The 'flagship' fighter of the Rebel Alliance, the X-wing is one of the most successful starfighters in the SW galaxy.
The standard X-wing carries four laser cannons and a pair of proton torpedo launchers. They are well-shielded and are equipped with a good hyperdrive. They use an R2 astromech droid to perform in-flight repairs, store hyperdrive coordinates, and fine-tune the craft's flight performance.
X-wings gained notoriety after Luke Skywalker, piloting one of these space superiority fighters, used a pair of proton torpedoes to destroy the first Death Star. Since that time, X-wings have proven vital in countless other successful Rebel operations. Their firepower and respectable speed and agility, combined with a long-range hyperdrive that almost eliminates their dependence on carrier vessels, make them highly versatile - flying missions ranging from convoy escort to long-distance precision bombing attacks.
Continual upgrade packages have kept X-wings competitive with newer fighter models. In fact, the XJ-wing variant is on par with modern fighters some 25 years after the Battle of Endor, making the X-wing one of the longest-serving fighter craft ever.
