Xel'Naga

Little is known of the Xel'Naga. They are believed to have come from another galaxy, implying significant FTL speeds. It appears that their goal is to create the perfect lifeform by genetically altering existing organisms: their first attempt, the Protoss, proved physically perfect by their standards, but was mentally flawed; their second attempt, the Zerg, were deemed mentally perfect but not physically perfect.

The Xel'Naga left the Protoss to their own devices after the First Born turned upon their 'creators.' The Zerg, on the other hand, ravaged the nomadic Xel'Naga civilization, almost to the point of extinction. The Zerg then set out to find and assimilate the Protoss, in their own way trying to fulfill their creator's goal of the perfect organism.

Yet some Xel'Naga managed to survive, and since their defeat they have focused on merging the 'distinct purity of form' of the Protoss with the 'distinct purity of essence' of the Zerg. If successful, such a Hybrid would possess the extreme athletic and psionic potential of the Protoss, and the fierce, communal consciousness and powerful evolutionary capacity of the Zerg. Such beings would be extremely difficult to defeat.

How many Xel'Naga exist is unknown, as is their exact relationship to the Hybrid beings they are attempting to create. All other aspects of their technology and culture are also unknown, but they are presumed to be highly advanced.
